Overview
Proverbs is one of the three wisdom books in the bible. Instead of telling a complete narrative like Job or Ecclesiastes, Proverbs consists of bite-sized chunks where each chapter is a short story with normal events and experiences of life.
What makes the book of Proverbs even more special is that it is a collection of a vast array of ideas and viewpoints. King Solomon began to collect proverbs from Egyptian collections during his reign. Later on King Hezekiah had scribes copy more of Solomon's proverbs. Additionally, later chapters in the book include proverbs from Agul, Lemuel, and Lemuel's mother.
Naturally then, the "setting" of proverbs is where the stores were cited, and who the target audience was. Often times, these lessons were given to families and communities. On the other hand, there were occurences of deliverances in the king's courtAs seen by the book's references in certain chapters. Therefore, we can expect both general teachings as well as advice on leadership, governing, etc.
